Free Markdown to Word Converter

Convert Markdown to Word online and download a real, editable DOCX. Paste your text or upload an .md file, check the live preview, and keep the document structure your reviewers need—without installing Pandoc or reformatting everything by hand.

Turn Markdown Into a Word Document People Can Actually Review

Markdown is excellent for drafting, but clients, professors, managers, and legal or operations teams often expect a Word file they can comment on. This Markdown to DOCX converter closes that last-mile gap while keeping the output editable.

ChatGPT or Claude responses

Paste AI-generated Markdown and turn headings, tables, quotes, lists, and code into a cleaner Word document instead of copying raw #, **, and | syntax.

Technical docs and GitHub READMEs

Convert a README, RFC, runbook, or design document to DOCX so non-technical reviewers can add comments in Microsoft Word.

Obsidian and VS Code notes

Upload an .md file or paste a finished draft when your Markdown-first workflow needs a Word-compatible handoff.

Reports and academic drafts

Move a structured report, research outline, or class assignment into Word for editing, feedback, and final styling.

What Stays Formatted in the DOCX?

The converter turns common Markdown structures into editable Word elements—not a screenshot or a block of raw Markdown. Preview the document before downloading so you can catch a broken table, list, or image early.

Headings and paragraphs

Heading levels H1–H6 become structured Word headings, with regular Markdown paragraphs kept as editable text.

Ordered, unordered, and task lists

List hierarchy and indentation are carried into the Word document so steps and checklists remain readable.

Editable Markdown tables

Standard Markdown tables become real DOCX tables with editable rows and cells.

Inline code and fenced code blocks

Code remains distinct and readable in a monospace style for technical review.

Links, blockquotes, and footnotes

Web and email links, quoted text, and Markdown footnotes are converted into useful Word equivalents.

Images when the source is reachable

Supported data images and public HTTP or HTTPS images can be embedded. Private, blocked, oversized, or unreachable images are marked in the document instead of silently disappearing.

How the DOCX Output Is Checked

The converter is covered by automated checks built around representative Markdown documents. The checks create a DOCX containing headings, lists, tables, and task lists, verify that the download is an Office Open XML package, and confirm that an unsupported image does not stop the rest of the document from exporting.

Last checked: July 16, 2026 for site version 1.6.0. Automated checks verify document creation and supported structure; they do not promise pixel-identical layout in every desktop or web editor. Always review page breaks, fonts, image placement, and wide tables in the app you will use for delivery.

Structure, not a screenshot

The generated file contains editable document elements for supported Markdown rather than a flattened image of the preview.

Graceful image fallback

If an image source is unsupported or cannot be reached, the converter marks the missing image and continues building the DOCX.

Final app check still matters

Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice can apply different font, spacing, table-width, and pagination defaults to the same DOCX.

How to Convert Markdown to Word

No command line, extension, or account is needed for a one-off conversion.

01

1. Paste Markdown or upload an .md file

Bring in a draft from ChatGPT, Claude, Obsidian, VS Code, GitHub, or any Markdown editor. Files can be up to 5 MB.

02

2. Check the live preview

Review headings, nested lists, tables, links, code blocks, footnotes, and images before export. Fix the source Markdown if anything looks wrong.

03

3. Download the editable Word file

Choose Word or DOCX and download the file. Open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice to comment, revise, or apply your organization’s template. If Google Docs is your destination, follow the Markdown to Google Docs workflow.

Private by Design, Clear About the Limits

Your Markdown is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to a conversion server. If it contains remote HTTP or HTTPS images, your browser may contact those image hosts during preview or DOCX export. See the Privacy Policy for the network requests that can still occur while you use the site.

No server upload for Word conversion

The text you paste and local .md files stay in the browser during DOCX generation. Remote image hosts are a separate exception: they may receive a request from your browser when an image is shown in the preview or embedded in the export.

Word styling can still vary

Document structure is preserved, but fonts, spacing, page breaks, and brand styling depend on Word and the template you apply after conversion.

Raw HTML and equations need another workflow

Raw HTML is not rendered, and LaTeX or Markdown math is not converted into editable Word equations. For equation-heavy papers or custom reference.docx templates, Pandoc is the better fit.

Remote images have practical limits

The converter supports up to 48 image sources, about 10 MB per image, and about 30 MB in total. Intranet URLs and local-only hosts cannot be embedded.

Markdown to Word FAQ

01

Can Microsoft Word open a Markdown file?

Word does not reliably turn a raw .md file into a formatted document. Converting the Markdown to DOCX first gives you structured, editable content that opens normally in Word.

02

How do I paste Markdown into Word without raw syntax?

Paste the Markdown into the editor above, verify the preview, and download the DOCX. This converts Markdown syntax into Word structure instead of leaving characters such as #, **, backticks, and table pipes in the document.

03

Can I convert a ChatGPT response to Word with formatting?

Yes. Copy the complete ChatGPT response, paste it above, and download the DOCX. Headings, lists, tables, quotes, links, and code blocks are converted when they use supported Markdown syntax.

04

Will Markdown tables remain editable in Word?

Yes. A valid Markdown table is converted into a native DOCX table, so you can edit its text, rows, and cells in Word. Use the preview to catch missing separators or malformed rows before export.

05

Does the converter support Markdown equations?

Not as editable Word equations. LaTeX math such as $...$ or $$...$$ is not currently converted into Word’s equation format. Use Pandoc or a dedicated math workflow for equation-heavy documents.

06

Is this Markdown to Word converter free and browser-based?

Yes. You can paste or upload Markdown, preview it, and generate a DOCX in your browser without creating an account.

07

Can I open the DOCX in Google Docs or LibreOffice?

Yes. The downloaded .docx file can be opened in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice. Small visual differences may appear because each app applies its own font and spacing defaults.

08

When should I use Pandoc instead?

Use Pandoc when you need batch conversion, command-line automation, citations, editable equations, or a custom reference.docx template. Use this online converter when you want a fast, no-install DOCX from a single Markdown draft.
